About
It all started when I got into drugs.
Specifically, a D.A.R.E. essay in fifth grade. I won. First writing award of my life.
I entered publishing in 1999 with a zine I made at Kinko’s and sold for fifty cents. We folded after issue two.
I became a journalism major because I walked into the campus paper, they needed an entertainment writer, and I wanted to go to shows and get records for free. I spent the rest of college abusing that position to platform hardcore and emo bands nobody had heard of yet. My approach to journalistic integrity was closer to High Fidelity than All the President’s Men, which is probably why I’m a better ad guy.
For all the shenanigans, I took the work seriously. Then I graduated into a job market where print was dying faster than anyone wanted to admit. That’s when I found out copywriting was a job you could have.
That was twenty years ago. I’ve been writing ever since, and somewhere along the way I started leading the people who write, setting the direction, and answering for the whole thing.
- First concert
- Danzig, with Type O Negative and Godflesh. December 6, 1994, Indianapolis. I was thirteen and had no business being there.
- Album I’ve never gotten sick of
- This Will Be the Death of Us, Set Your Goals.
- Movie I never get sick of
- Pulp Fiction. Yes, it’s the most basic answer possible. No, I don’t care.
- Best superhero
- Cyclops. Leadership is thankless and Wolverine should absolutely be on a PIP.
- Thing I’m bad at
- In the words of Phil Collins, I can’t dance.
